TADs

Temporary Anchorage Devices (TADs)

Temporary anchorage devices, or TADs, are small titanium anchors used in certain orthodontic cases to help achieve quicker tooth movement with more efficiency and comfort. TADs may be used in addition to braces or as an alternative to headgear.

How Are TADs Placed?

A strong anesthetic is used to numb the gum tissue and the jaw surrounding the area where the TAD will be placed. Once the area is numb, your doctor will gently place the TAD through the gum tissue and firmly into the jawbone. The placement of a TAD is quick and may be over before you know it. While your doctor is placing the TAD, you may experience slight pressure; within a day, you will no longer feel it. Your TAD is removed once your treatment is complete or no longer needed to help straighten your teeth. Removal of a TAD is a comfortable procedure that takes just a few minutes.

What Can I Do To Relieve Discomfort Caused By My TAD?

If you do feel any discomfort from having your TADs placed, Tylenol® is recommended to help relieve your pain. If you continue to experience discomfort days after your treatment, please contact your dentist as soon as possible.

How can I keep my TAD clean?

A TAD can be cleaned the same way you clean your braces: by brushing your teeth at least three times a day. When your TAD is placed, we will also provide you with an antimicrobial mouthwash to be used twice daily.

If you have questions about TADs, please contact our practice. We will be able to answer any of your questions and provide you with detailed information about your orthodontic treatment.

When Are TADs Recommended?

Temporary Anchorage Devices may be recommended in orthodontic cases where precise tooth movement is needed and traditional braces alone are not enough. TADs are commonly used to help close spaces, move teeth vertically, correct bite concerns, or provide added support in more complex treatment plans. They are especially helpful when controlling unwanted tooth movement or when alternatives to headgear are preferred.

TADs enable more controlled and efficient orthodontic treatment in situations requiring additional anchorage.

Benefits of Using TADs in Orthodontic Treatment

TADs provide a stable anchor point that allows for more accurate and predictable tooth movement. This added control can improve treatment efficiency and help achieve results that may be difficult with braces alone.

Benefits of TADs include:

  • Improved precision during tooth movement
  • Reduced need for headgear
  • Increased efficiency in complex cases
  • Comfortable and minimally invasive placement

When used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, TADs can support better outcomes with fewer limitations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about Temporary Anchorage Devices and how they fit into orthodontic treatment? These FAQs provide helpful answers so you know what to expect and can feel confident moving forward.

Yes. TADs are made from medical-grade titanium and have been used safely in orthodontics for many years. They are biocompatible and designed specifically for temporary use during treatment.

In most cases, TADs are placed in discreet areas of the mouth and are not noticeable when smiling or speaking. Your orthodontist will carefully select the placement site to balance effectiveness and appearance.

The length of time a TAD is used varies depending on your treatment goals. Some patients need a TAD for only a few months, while others may use one longer. Once it is no longer needed, it is easily removed.

Yes. After the initial placement period, most patients can return to their normal diet. It’s best to avoid hard or sticky foods near the TAD to prevent irritation or damage while the area is healing.

No. TADs are used to support orthodontic treatment, not replace it. They work alongside braces or clear aligners to help move teeth more efficiently in specific situations.
